Expanding Scott’s World: A Journey of Autism Through Art

September 25, 2021 - January 2, 2022

To visit the exhibit please pre-register with the museum.

Just as we say goodbye to the bright colors of summer, a new source of mood-lifting visual splendor awaits guests September 25, 2021, to January 2, 2022, when artworks of Michigan artist Scott Yukio Fergus will be exhibited. Described as abstract or interpretive realism by the art world, his works are even more interesting for the ways in which they reflect Scott’s personal journey. Scott was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum when he was a child. His ability to use visual art forms to convey meaning from his perspective has had a significant impact on his individual growth as well as the special relationships he has formed with others.

The exhibit traces his life thus far using pieces to demonstrate both his artistic evolution and the people and places important to him. Although the art is unquestionably stunning, the primary goal of this presentation is to bring awareness to how people with special needs see and feel in a community, and how a community may see and feel about them.
